Planning to travel from India to the breathtakingly beautiful island of Sri Lanka? You’re not alone! Sri Lanka is now one of the favorite foreign tourist destinations for Indian travelers because it’s near, we do have some similarities, it’s just so naturally gorgeous, and it’s rather cheap. But maybe one of the most common questions we receive at Indian Lanka Travels is do Indians need a visa to go to Sri Lanka? The short answer is yes, but don’t worry it’s an easy procedure!
Simple Visa Process for Indian Citizens
Yes, Indian passport holders need to have a visa to visit Sri Lanka. But it is very straightforward and doesn’t mean you need to visit an embassy. You can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online, and it’s quick, affordable, and stress-free. ETA is the most popular way of entry for Indian tourists to Sri Lanka and allows you to stay for 30 days.
It is very easy to obtain an ETA. You just access the official site www.eta.gov.lk, fill in your details, pay a small fee (approximately USD 20–28), and you should get your approval within 1–3 working days. Visa assistance is included with most of our Sri Lanka Tour Packages at Indian Lanka Travels, so you have nothing to worry about!
What Documents Do You Need?
To be eligible to apply for an ETA, you’ll need an existing Indian passport that has at least 6 months’ validity, a recent passport photo, an onward ticket purchased ahead of time, and enough money. When your ETA is being processed, it will be sent to you via email. Simply print out a copy and carry it with you during travel.
Also, if you’re traveling with kids under 12 years old, there’s good news that they don’t need to pay the visa fee, but they still must apply for the ETA.
Flights from India to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is very well connected with India, especially from major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad. From Mumbai, it is easy to get regular direct flights to Colombo with airlines like SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, and Air India. With a flying time of just 2.5–3 hours, Sri Lanka is an ideal destination for a quick foreign holiday.
Our Sri Lanka Tours for Indians are designed keeping in mind this convenience whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a spiritual retreat, we’ve got the right package for you.
Affordable Destination for Indian Travellers
One of the finest things about traveling to Sri Lanka is that it is extremely inexpensive for Indian travelers. The currency used here is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), and everything right from lodging to dining and sightseeing is highly cost-effective. We have different Sri Lanka Tour Packages at Indian Lanka Travels for all budgets, starting from luxury tour packages to budget packages.
Our tours also cater to Indian palates. Some of our tours have Indian cuisine, Hindi guides, and visits to religious and cultural places like the Seetha Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya, the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, and several more.
What About Visa-Free Travel?
You may have heard that Sri Lanka launched a visa-free regime for Indian visitors during late 2024. Even though this was a tourism stimulus valid for some months, the regime was temporary and is no longer valid. At present, up to 2025, Indian citizens need to acquire an ETA before entering Sri Lanka.
If any new visa free concessions come through again, we’ll be the first to inform you just stick with Indian Lanka Travels for all the latest travel news and updates!
